Taylor Swift’s album 1989 just topped the Billboard album chart, selling 1.287 million units in one week. That makes it the biggest-selling album released in 2014 and the largest sales week for an album since 2002, when Emimen’s album sold 1.322 million units in a week.
She also becomes the only act to have three albums sell more than one million units in a week of release. (Her last two albums, Red and Speak Now, both surpassed one million sales in first week of release.)
It’s a fairly monumental achievement, but there is one record she did not touch. And that belongs to Britney Spears, who retains the record for the highest sales debut for a female artist.
Back in 2000, Spears’ album Oops!…I Did It Again sold 1.325 million copies in a week, a record that has yet to be broken.
Naturally, Britney Spears fans are very excited about this and have used every opportunity to lord it over Taylor Swift fans with memes, GIFs and more.
